A man who was arrested for a hit-and-run that killed a Batavia man and his dog July 29 was charged with aggravated drunken driving and  reckless homicide last week.

After Eward O. Cook was arrested for murdering David Long, police investigators discovered that Cook was driving drunk and had marijuana in his system. At the time of the accident, Long was walking his dog through the neighborhood.

Some advocates for the defense are arguing that murder charges in drunken driving accidents are excessive. However, groups critical of drunken driving like Mothers Against Drunk Driving believe the charges are just punishments for the crimes.
