When children are arrested for crimes, they are often tried in a juvenile court. These courts and their accompanying prison system are designed differently than the U.S. traditional system of justice.
Instead of focusing on punishment, juvenile systems try to educate children and give them a chance to rehabilitate. In some cases, the intake officer may choose to dismiss formal charges and submit the juvenile to alternative form of penalty, such as counseling or community service.
