What occurs at a criminal defendant's first court hearing?

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 No Comments

When an individual is arrested for a crime, that person will likely appear before a judge. At that court date, if the individual cannot afford an attorney, then he or she will be appointed a public defender.

Usually at the first court hearing, the defendant will offer a plea or request a preliminary hearing. While many of the events of an initial court hearing may seem to be a formality, it is important for any individual charged with a crime to have an experienced lawyer on their side.
