Construction zone flagger killed off Illinois 1

Posted on Monday, September 20th, 2010 at 2:03 pm

A man working as a flagger was killed in an on-the-job accident earlier this month.  44-year old Wayne Petersen of Orland Park was hit by a grain truck while working at the construction zone off of Illinois 1 on Thursday, September 9th.  Petersen was transported via helicopter to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana and later pronounced dead two hours after the accident.

Illinois State Police officers say that the truck, driven by 60-year old Garner Jack, swerved to avoid a car stopped near the work zone.  Petersen reportedly saw the truck coming towards him and tried to run into a nearby ditch.  Jack was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident and failure to stop for a flagger at a construction site.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Petersen’s family and friends.
