Last Thursday, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced proposed fines of $16.6 million against 3 construction companies and 14 contractors involved in the construction power plant explosion at Kleen Energy Systems LLC in Middletown, Connecticut last February. The fines are the third highest in history for a single workplace accident.
The accident occurred during the cleaning of a supply line using flammable natural gas. Six workers were killed in the accident and fifty were injured.
OSHA decided on the fines based off 371 complaints of workplace safety violations, including 225 considered to be willfully done. U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis stated in regards to the violations, “No operation and no deadline is worth cutting corners and costing a single human life”.

Earlier this month, the Obama administration approved 25 million dollars worth of grants to be distributed to universities, medical centers, and state health departments in an attempt to try to reduce medical malpractice costs and lawsuits across the country.
In an address to Congress last September, President Obama made a promise to Republicans to include reducing medical malpractice in health care reform. ”I don’t believe malpractice reform is a silver bullet, but I’ve talked to enough doctors to know that defensive medicine may be contributing to unnecessary costs,” stated Obama.
White House administrators hope the funds will reduce injury and improve doctor/patient communication, as a result lowering liability insurance premiums and lowering the number of medical malpractice lawsuits.

One of the ways that people try to improve their health is by going to the gym. However, the gym presents many hazards that could lead to a range of injuries.
For instance, people are often injured by weights that fall off machines. In such accidents, the gym owner can be held liable for not preventing a foreseeable danger.
Another typical accident is a machine malfunction. When this occurs, the machine can cause serious harm to the user. In such accidents, the gym owner or the machine manufacturer could be held liable for the damages.
