Champaign police rely heavily on cameras

In Champaign-Urbana, there are at least 2,000 security cameras on public property.  This number does not include the inestimable amount of video cameras in business and on private property.

Champaign police chief R.T. Finney stated, “We have a lot of private businesses’ cameras.  Those cameras are everywhere.  Just about every business has cameras inside and outside and they’ll catch parking lots.  The first thing we do now at a crime scene is go around the businesses that are near the scene and ask if their camera may have caught anything”.

In addition, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District recently announced that they plan to install 1,000 new cameras on buses and city vehicles by the end of the year.
