Champaign man charged with murder of sister

54-year old Maury D. Butler was charged with murder after his sister, 58-year old Jean Butler was found dead by her son in the home the brother and sister shared in Champaign in April.

Butler was declared unfit to stand trial after being charged but has recently been ruled fit by a Champaign psychiatrist Larry Jeckel.  Being fit for trial means that one is able to understand the charges made against them in order to properly participate with their lawyers and in court.  Fitness does not involve whether or not a defendant is mentally ill or insane when the crime is committed.

Court documents show that Butler does have a history of mental illness and lived with his sister under her care.
