Former Champaign police officer arrested for second DUI

41-year old Lisa Staples was recenty arrested for her second DUI. Staples is a former Champaign police officer who resigned from her position two years after receiving her first DUI charge in 2008.

In 2008, Staples was charged with driving under the influence after driving an unmarked police vehicle the wrong way on Interstate 72 at around 2:30 A.M. Prosecutors negotiated a plea deal with Staples who plead guilty to the misdemeanor DUI charge and was sentenced to 18 months of court supervision.

Last Monday, Staples was arrested again for a secon DUI charge. Police officers responded to a call about an two-vehicle car accident on Illinois 10 at around 9:30 P.M. According to police reports, Staples rear-ended an SUV vehicle infront of her in the westbound lanes of the highway. Police took Staples into custody on charges of failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence. She was released from the Champaign County jail three hours after the arrest.
